AWARDS BANQUET

On November 20th, the Grunion swim team celebrated their second anniversary.  Over 80 team members gathered at Alcapulco to reflect on the past, celebrate our accomplishments and anticipate what the future will bring.

The team captain and co-captain, Sergio and Stevie, announced the new team officers (see above). Unfortunately, when announcing the new board, we neglected to mention Drew as our facilities coordinator, our apologies!

Mike Kienitz, our team treasurer, presented the out going captain and co-captain with team parkas, thank you cards and checks for $1,000 and $300 to thank them for all their efforts these past two years.

Bart, our team secretary, presented our hard working coaching staff with coaches gifts. He also welecomed Jacquie back to the Grunions and joining the coaching staff. In addition, we forgot to acknowledge Drew and his addition to the coaching staff as well.

Stevie and the Viking presented the "funny" awards of the evening, much to the laughter and delight of the rest of the team.

The final awards, the more "serious" awards of the night were presented by the Viking.

We wrapped up the evening by giving everyone the opportunity to speak and share their thoughts and opinions about their swim team experience. It turned out to be the most emotional part of the evening as we discovered that in the course of two years we have evolved from a group of individuals to a family.

MEMBERSHIP
RENEWAL

It's that time of year! Time to renew your SPMA (Southern Pacific Masters Association  membership. It is very important for all team members to register with SPMA, even those who do not plan to compete in swim meets. SPMA provides our liability insurance, but only if all our team members are registered.

Therefore, it is very important to the team that everyone registers.  Any team member who does not renew in a timely basis may be asked to sit out practice until their renew has been processed.

Please don't wait. Click the link above to download the form and send it in today! You'll be glad you did.

GRUNIONS GO TO
LAS VEGAS!

It's that time of year again...we're heading to Las Vegas!!!!  Make room on your calendar for January 14-16.  We'll be leaving at 6:00 pm on Friday, January 14 and returning around 6-8:00 pm on Sunday, January 16.  For most of you, Monday is a holiday as well.

Last year was our first team trip to the Las Vegas Short Course Yards swim meet.  Everyone had a great time!

This year we're heading back.  This is the perfect opportunity for all of you who have never swam in a meet to start...IT'S ONLY 25 YARDS PER LAP...it doesn't get any easier in swimming!  The meet atmosphere is very fun and informal.  The Grunions make-up half of the participants...let's make it even more this year.  And the swim meet only takes up a few hours on Saturday, the rest of the time is free.

We've chartered a bus that seats 55 people for the whole weekend.  All it will cost you is $37.50 for a round-trip to Vegas with all your Grunion friends.  You can also invite non-Grunions to come along for the fun.

Yuji has found a hotel for us as well.  We have about 20 rooms reserved at the Las Vegas Double Tree.  The hotel is only $109 per night (plus taxes) for up to four people.  You can request a king or two standard beds.  That's only $27.25 per night, if you're sharing with 3 friends.  The hotel also has a free shuttle service to the Strip.

Keep in mind that space is limited to the first 55 people to sign-up AND pay.  Your seat will only be reserved once you've paid for it.

We will make PayPal available for bus payments or you can give me, Cupcake, a check/cash.

Let's make it a great trip!

SPMA CHAMPIONSHIP MEET UPDATE

As many of you heard at the Banquet over the weekend, we are well on our way to hosting a very successful SPMA Championship Meet in just a couple of weeks!

One of the things everyone can do to help make this a smooth-running and successful meet is to volunteer to be a timer on the lanes.  If you’ve never done it before, it’s very easy, and it’s actually a great way to watch the events and cheer on other Grunions!

We are asking people to commit to 3-hour time slots for timing.  The time slots are as follows:

Saturday:          9:00 – 12:00 and 12:00 – 3:00

Sunday:            9:00 – 12:00 and 12:00 – 3:00

Monday:            1:00 – 4:00

The goal is to get at least 20 people committed to each time slot (both Grunions and non-Grunions encouraged to participate!).  This will provide enough people to cover the lanes, and still have extra folks to fill in when people need to swim an event or take a bathroom break.  So please don’t let the fact that you are swimming an event stop you from signing up… We will cover you so you can swim your events.  We just want to be sure we have plenty of people who are committed to being there and willing to time.

Get your friends and family members to come out and time for us, too!  They will want a good poolside view to watch you kick butt in the pool!!

I have sign-up lists that I am trying to fill up, so please call me (562-233-2669) or email me (mdillonmsw@aol.com) to let me know which slot(s) you want to volunteer for! THANKS a lot…

Your new Co-Captain,

MattyBear
